Cam Newton may not play in preseason opener

Coach Ron Rivera said "We don't know the plan yet for Cam on Friday. It's all based on what head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion and the doctors think and how Cam's ankle feels once we get past Thursday morning." Rivera added that if Newton does play, his action will be limited to the usual one or two series that starters in the first preseason game typically receive. "I imagine it will involve a lot of handing the ball off," he said.

Fantasy Impact: The simple fact that Newton might not play in the preseason opener shouldn't concern fantasy owners. Even if he plays, he would only receive one or two series. With a limited workload expected anyway, there's no reason to panic just yet. This is the franchise protecting their greatest asset. With the wide receivers needing reps and Rivera hinting at handoffs for Newton, it’s a good bet that he sits Friday.
